August 2019 Geocacher Profile

Aug 31, 2019 - 9:17 PM - by MathSeeker
Tim Stone served in many capacities in the Arkansas Geocachers Association. Tim served on several committees and the ArkGeo board. He was an Eagle Scout and an active leader with the boy scouts. His involvement with the boy scouts is where his geocaching name, BSA534, came from.

August 1, 2019, Tim Stone passed away at the age of 52. He fought diabetes, amputations and more, while remaining so kind and hopeful. If you knew him, you know how much he loved Jesus, Lorna (his wife), Connor and Logan (his children), the boy scouts, geocaching, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Tim was a great guy, and he will be missed.

Tim was the Geocacher Profiled in February 2012. Tim did not get to do much geocaching after 2012 due to health issues.
The following was his response to the questionnaire.

What is your geocaching name?
BSA534

How did you choose your handle?
I’m Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America and my troop is 534

How long have you been geocaching?

Since 9/3/2007

How did you find your first Geocache, and which one was it?

The kids were out of school and I was off work and I’d heard of geocaching, and I had a GPSr, so I thought I’d look online and see if maybe there were any caches nearby, I figured we’d need to drive to Little Rock to find one though. I was surprised to find there were dozens in Conway. We went out and started looking. We looked for several that day before we finally found our first one, “Cache in on Soccer! (GC14XEB) was actually hidden by one of my Assistant Scoutmasters from my troop, but I didn’t know that at the time.

Who usually goes with you when you go caching?

Originally, my son, Connor or my daughter, Logan. Occasionally my wife will tag along and sit in the car and read while I hunt caches.

How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?

Depends on which type of puzzle it is. I’m not real patient, so probably not very long.

What town/areas have you most enjoyed caching in?

I loved caching in Clarksville back when I first started. So many cool and creative caches. Also love Searcy and most recently the Hot Springs area.

Do you do paperless caching?

Tried to do paper caching my first weekend... then went out and bought a Palm first thing Monday morning! Been paperless ever since.

What kind of geocaching rig do you use?

Garmin GPSMap60csx with street maps. Iphone 4 for paperless.

Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?

Its a great family activity, but you can do it on your own, or with friends. Great way to spend a day hunting for caches!

Where are you originally from?

Ashdown, in SW Arkansas

In what states you have geocached?

Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois (11 total)

What was your first event ever attended?

Meet and Greet- MORRILTON - GC16CX6 It was my 100th find!

How many caches have you found?
2350

Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?

Big caches, like ammo cans, something I can put some swag in!

What was the most famous cache that you have found?

Sledgehammer GCGNET I didn’t find that many caches when I went to Geowoodstock 7 in Bell Buckle, TN, but one I really wanted to find was this one by MonkeyBrad. It is described as a “4x4 container under a pile of rocks” Its been “favorited” over 30 times, and I understand why. If you are ever in the area, check it out!

Do you use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries?

Disposable.

Do you enjoy hiding or finding more as your part of the hobby?

Finding

Do you have a personal goal in mind when you make a hide?

Bring cachers to a specific area or to see something they might have missed otherwise.

What is you favorite type of cache hide?

A large container, especially one that kids can find and swap swag because I know they really enjoy that part of the game.
Out of all your hides, what are your personal favorites that you take pride in?
“Out By the Shop” GC178FG Its been found over 250 times. It sits right outside my office window. It gives me the opportunity to visit with cachers when they come to find it.

What do you think the proper hide to find ratio should be to keep the sport fresh?

1:100. I also think maybe new cachers should have to log 100 finds before they can make their first hide. I still remember most of those first 100 finds. They were the best!

How did you end up getting into this wacky hobby?

I was hooked after that first day of caching. It took me a while to meet some other cachers and find some friends to start going with. But once that happened it was downhill from there!

What's your favorite geocache?

How Do You Measure Up, As A Cacher? GCVF6Q Sadly its gone, but it was one of the best in the state. Worth the trip to Clarksville just for this one. Hopefully you found it!

If money was no object, where would you like to go geocaching?

England I think would be fun.

Do you like geocaching by yourself or in a group?

GROUP!

How many First to Finds do you have?

48 - but I haven’t had once since January 2010.

Are you a First to Find person who is always set on go and if so, how many miles out do you have your settings on to get notifications?
Not a FTF hunter anymore. Leave that for the newer cachers so they can have that thrill.

Do you have any other hobbies besides geocaching?

Scouting, church and family activities take up most of my time these days.

July 2019 Geocacher Profile

Jul 01, 2019 - 5:42 PM - by MathSeeker
The Membership Relations Committee is happy to showcase some ArkGeo Geocachers through the "Geocacher Profile". The committee thought Richard Hicks aka Mailman72432 should be the next cacher to be in the spotlight.

What is your geocaching name?

Mailman72432

How did you choose your handle?
Well I'm a mail carrier. Everyone who talks to me calls me Mailman..."hey, mailman!" I work at Harrisburg and the zipcode is 72432. Used to be Mailman72396 when I worked at Wynne P.O.

How long have you been geocaching?
Started this craziness January 2005.

How did you find your first Geocache, and which one was it?
Found Wynne's Bravest GCM263 with a borrowed gpsr just to try it out.

Who usually goes with you when you go caching?
Used to be my kids but they're grown and have their own lives. Now I take a friend, Nanaof3, but she rarely logs any. She just likes to try and beat me to the find.

How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?
Until it gives me a headache. GC4WGNX ... for example. I just don't get it.

What town/areas have you most enjoyed caching in?
I enjoyed Little Rock. I think because I was able to just meander around on foot and look at whatever on my way to the next find. It's crazy that I liked urban caching so much because I'm really a country, backroads kind of person.

Do you do paperless caching?
Yes definitely. All my notes are on my phone now. Didn't use to tho. Had notes and printed descriptions everywhere.

What kind of geocaching rig do you use?

Use my Samsung phone and a Magellan if I'm somewhere that has absolutely no signal. Usually in my old Geo Tracker or the Oreion Reeper, because it has trackable tags on it.

Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?
Why? It's fun! It opens up your sense of adventure. It takes you to places you probably would never see otherwise. It gets you off the couch and it works your brain.

Where are you originally from?
Grew up in Helena, Ar.

In what states have you geocached?
Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

What was your first event ever attended?

NEA Meet and Greet. GCY0V6 10/8/2006.

How many caches have you found?
595. Looking for a good one for number 600.

Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?
Doesn't really matter to me as long as I find it, but homemade containers with personal touches are awesome.

What was the most famous cache that you have found?
Gorilla Stash

Do you use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries?
Both. Recharge the phone and disposable in the Magellan.

Do you enjoy hiding or finding more as your part of the hobby?
Finding. All but one of my hides have been archived. Couldn't keep up with them bc life kept getting in the way. I'm working on some new ones tho.

Do you have a personal goal in mind when you make a hide?
Make it fun, difficult, easy, and interesting all at the same time.

What is your favorite type of cache hide?

Good old traditional hides. No matter the size or location.

Out of all your hides, what are your personal favorites that you take pride in?
I only have 4 hides and 3 are archived. All of them were very fun for me, but I have to say my favorite was MP 13620 Caboose GCRZJY . The logs on this one were great to read.

What do you think the proper hide to find ratio should be to keep the sport fresh?
For myself 1:100. I'm slacking, I know. I just work so much I can't get the time. For others with more time I say as many as you can keep up with.

How did you end up getting into this wacky hobby?
I was introduced to caching by a friend, Combine, who was prepping a hide he was about to put out and I just had to try it out. I had to borrow his gps because at the time I had nothing, not even a cellphone.

What's your favorite geocache?

Bitbrain's Island Stash GC9598 . It was a difficult one to say the least. After finally canoeing our way to the island we had to bushwack our way to the cahe. Sweaty, beaten, bruised, and bloody, but we made it. That is a trip I'll never forget.

If money was no object, where would you like to go geocaching?
Austrailia/New Zealand. Then anywhere and everywhere.

Do you like geocaching by yourself or in a group?
I'm usually by myself or with one friend.

How many First to Finds do you have?
22 early morning rush out the door FTF

Are you a First to Find person who is always set on go and if so, how many miles out do you have your settings on to get notifications?
I used to be. I'd jump up at a moment's notice to beat Combine to them. Our friendly competition has ended tho. Now I'm a leisurely get up and go wherever whenever I can type of cacher.

Do you have any other hobbies besides geocaching?
Kayaking, hiking, and wandering around the backroads of Arkansas, which all lead to geocaching.

June 2019 Geocacher Profile

Jun 02, 2019 - 6:50 PM - by MathSeeker
The Membership Relations Committee is happy to showcase some ArkGeo Geocachers through the "Geocacher Profile". The committee thought Linda Boyett aka TeamCocoaJP should be the next cacher to be in the spotlight.

What is your geocaching name?
TeamCocoaJP

How did you choose your handle?
I started off as LindaXplores. After a few weeks I changed it to Shadow Chaos. Then when my beloved Cocoa (furbaby) passed-I changed it to TeamCocoaJP. As I carry her log my dog with me everywhere and we are a team. The JP is for her full name of Cocoa Jasmine Puffs.

How long have you been geocaching?
October 1, 2015

How did you find your first Geocache, and which one was it?
My first official cache was LCCC Dunkard Brethren which is now archived. Ironically I'm now the CO of LCCC-Dunkard Brethren Cemetery.

Who usually goes with you when you go caching?
My son CWBisnumber1. Sometimes the geohound Cujo will go. And once in a while I go alone or just the geohound and I go.

How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?
It varies. They drive me nuts lol. Some I have worked on for hours that went into days. Some I try for a while and ended up saying NOPE not happening and walk away in disgust lol. Sometimes I will slink back and retry them. Some are on the 'maybe one day' list.

What town/areas have you most enjoyed caching in?
The one right next to me, Cabot. It has lots of caches, puzzles, gadget caches, series, etc.

Do you do paperless caching?
I think this was before my time on caching lol. Oddly I do carry a notepad and pen when I cache to take notes on, as I log when I get home.

What kind of geocaching rig do you use?
Samsung Galaxy. I have been eyeballing Garmin's.

Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?
Yes. Its a great way to explore areas, see new things that you might not notice otherwise. And a good family activity to do outdoors. Love that you can take the furbuddies along too. Also for me personally it was/is a challenge. As I was told after getting a blood clot in my leg which results in it swelling and going numb etc-that I would never be able to do things like this. (Climbing rocks-up and down a 1000 steps). Well I proved to them and more importantly to myself.. oh yes I can and I have.

Where are you originally from?
I was born in Georgia (AF Base). I'm 1/2 British (Mom's side). Dad retired here in Arkansas. I married a man in the Air Force. Thought we'd travel everywhere. LOL we were here the whole 20 years he served. So guess you would say from here basically.

In what states have you geocached?
Besides Arkansas. Oklahoma, Missouri and Mississippi. Planning on Louisiana later this year.

What was your first event ever attended?
C.A.G.E. Meet, Greet, and Eat at David's Burgers- October 1, 2015.

How many caches have you found?
1466

Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?
All. I like a variety.

What was the most famous cache that you have found?
Gorilla Stash

Do you use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries?
Rechargeable

Do you enjoy hiding or finding more as your part of the hobby?
I like both.

Do you have a personal goal in mind when you make a hide?
I always hope someone enjoys getting them. For me besides the cemeteries-most of mine are personal to me.

What is your favorite type of cache hide?
I like them all!

Out of all your hides, what are your personal favorites that you take pride in?
Cocoa's series. I have more in the works that I'm working on. Probably 'Cocoa's Toybox' from the series. As it's intended to have swag for the furbuddies who travel with us or wait at home for us to return.

What do you think the proper hide to find ratio should be to keep the sport fresh?
Whatever you can maintain! Anything from 1 to 1000 as long as you can keep up with it.

How did you end up getting into this wacky hobby?
I was a muggle tagging along with my son and found it interesting.

What's your favorite geocache?
MathSeeker-Irish Dolman Replica. This is also the one that started me on this journey of wanting to keep caching. I loved it so much that geobuddy son and I brought Cocoa here (before she passed) and I took a lot of wonderful pictures of Cocoa and my son. Memories that I will cherish forever. Also woodwalker9-Zonkey. If it wasn't for caching, I'd probably never see an animal like that. And RAZZ007 -007 series. I had so much fun and funny and good memories doing that series. But it did spoil me. I thought all series was going to be in that good of shape lol. Yeah I know that's more than 1 lol. Hard to pick just 1. I love the gadgets, locations and ammo boxes etc. But my favorites are usually ones that are personal to the CO. Or ones that the furbuddy enjoys or the fun and adventure I had getting the cache.

If money was no object, where would you like to go geocaching?
Nova Scotia-near Oak island. England-I want to see the TARDIS and Stonehenge.

Do you like geocaching by yourself or in a group?
With my son and geohound Cujo.

How many First to Finds do you have?
1

Are you a First to Find person who is always set on go and if so, how many miles out do you have your settings on to get notifications?
No-not my thing. Plus where I live-its hard to get a FTF lol.

Do you have any other hobbies besides geocaching?
Some yardwork! Love to read. Oddly I like reading cache logs-not just on my hides. I like reading other peoples logs on caches. Also like going back and rereading my logs on ones I have found. I guess reliving the fun lol. So if you have a premium that I have found and my name is on the 'looked at' part a gazillion times-that is why. Online games, and NASCAR.
