Inappropriate items in caches

I don't know about the rest of you but here recently some of the caches I've visited had inappropriate items in them. I don't know if this is because the cachers who placed the item in the cache didn't know that these items should not be placed in a cache or they just didn't care. If I see an item that I think is inappropriate I take that item out and replcae it with something more appropriate.

Some of the items I've pulled out of caches are: Box of matches, Box Cutter, Sunflower Seeds.

These are all either dangerous if they fall into some of our Lil Cachers hands, or inappropriate due to Ani-muggling (Animals smelling food in cache and attacking/destroying it to get to the food){Is Ani-Muggling a new word?!?}

I guess the most inappropriate thing we've found would be box-cutter. Cool tool, but probably not appropriate for a cache. Turns out that it was broken anyways.

We've also found several knives and multi-tools with a knife attachment, even though there are now specific geocaching.com guidelines that advise against putting them in caches.

Well, I do think box-cutters are not wise in a cache. As for pocket knives or multi-tools, I think those are pretty cool. I think that most kids that go caching with adults are pretty responsible and most have probably had a pocket knife at some point in time. Heck, I remember when I was in school all the guys had pocket knives, now a days you would be threw out for carrying a weapon, come on..........

I have also found condoms and personal lubricants in caches, these things are for SURE uunappropriate!!!

Your Thread deals with Strangest items, some of which are inappropriate. Mine deals with strickly inappropriate items. Unfortunately I haven't really found anything strange or unusual (other than a few cache containers up near Clarksville) just normal cache items and a few that should have been there.

These are similar but subtly different.

We also found a joint and what we thought was a crack pipe. The log had an entry something like " Janie and I climbed up here to do a doobie and found your stuff. Cool Dude"

Something happened to that stuff that day :roll:

When we found Hawksbill Crak there was a new pair of ladies underwear inside with a geocaching logo. I swear. 8O

We also did see the Leopard panties near Visine last Jan. ...that's it poppy

We found some live ammo (rifle cartridges) in two of the Leatherwood caches.

Also like Poppy, we found some "ganja" in a senic bluff cache with a log saying that they were high and drunk when they found the cache - they loved the idea. We're glad they survived the hike!

Poppy, those Geocaching panties were floating around the northern AR & Southern MO area big time about a year ago. We found them in several cache sites but haven't seen any lately.

The most disgusting thing we've found is a used saftety "item" - didn't even try to sign the log on that one! Signed our name on a piece of paper & dropped it in the box!

The best thing we've ever found is a compass - ours. A year after we lost it, someone found it and placed it in a brand new cache nearby - and we happened to be the very next cachers to find the new cache. Absolutely amazing!

If you read the first logs on Visine on the day of the Meet and Greet you will find references to the Leopard Print undies. Perhaps those Mighty Whiteys are the same pair just sun bleached. They couldn't be mine because.....well this is a family forum........poppy

Im gonna have to agree with rusty and sticker dude, i dont realy see a problem in having pocket knifes in caches. I mean im 12 and i carry my pocket knifes around with me and kids cant drive till there 16 and at that age there responsibe enough to be able to carry pocket knifes. In my oppinion if a kid is caching with an adult they should see if what they are taking out is ok with the parent. which will prevent them from taking anything that they shouldnt.

Well I have found some pretty strange thing in caches,most I will not list and got rid of it.
I always update it with something better.

I will mention the Geocaching panties though,at the time I did not think about it and it was not in the rules but these were ..............well and had a geocaching logo on them too.

as far as utilty tools if appropriate and in the appropriate cache I would welcome them.I do not have a problem except in urban setting,but the Rural country,has it's place the country and coutry kids all have them.

Yep. Almost anything could be used as a weapon. For the most part, I would say that the problem is not with the knives, but with irresponsible adults. Knives don't kill people, people kill people. And all that jazz...

However, I can see some merit to GC.com's decision to change their guidelines regarding knives. I guess knives in caches COULD be construed by SOME as a bad practice. Remember, this is just a GC.com guideline, not really a rule. (GC.com Translation: If you still wanna trade items like this, we're not gonna try to stop you. Just call it a multi-tool in your log. :) )

I agree , if you find something inappropriate , take it out. Someone left a rubber snake in guido and bambi...fortunately , I was checking our trap line and found it ; rather than some dad with a gaggle of kids. Although physically harmless it could have soured some family on geocaching . All of ours are family caches. 8)

I found the Flatside Pinnacle cache this weekend while backpacking on the Ouachita Trail. This is a very beautiful spot for a cache. The cache contained a pill bottle with pot and rolling papers inside. I smoked.....I mean dumped it out :lol:

According to the GC forums the most appreciated item found in caches, hands down, are the multi-tools. So here is how I feel about it. If you don't think they should be in a cache then take them, (you are free to take anything you wish right?) and log that that is what you took. To do anything other then that, like take all the stuff you don't like without logging it is inappropriate. If the item is so bad it should not be listed in the online log then you should e-mail the cache owner of the find and the removal.
They need to know what is being left in their cache, they may choose to hide it better or move it.

I used to get Swiss Army knives at the dollar store and use them for my item. They seemed to be pretty good, they never stayed in the cache very long. I wasn't aware that they had changed to list to include knives.

I bought over $150 worth of Multi-Tools to leave in caches after reading the G.C. post about what is your favorite items to find in caches but after hearing someone at the meet&greet say they take them out as inappropriate I went back to the caches and they were gone but not listed in the log. I think they are one of the best/smartest/useful things, along with water-proof matches, you can take to the woods/camping/hiking/hunting/etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in Arkansas you must be 16 to buy a folding knife at a retail store (ID required but you can give a kid a knife at any age) and 16 to drive alone. That means that unless people are letting under age drivers have the GPS and car to go caching, or they are just letting the kids run wild through the woods and open caches without supervision (I recall at the meet&greet a snake had decided to sunbathe on top of a cache that the kids were looking for plus many other stories) then according to the strictest laws of the state, common sense and good judgement, you did nothing wrong.
GC didn't say you would get fired if you left a MT but I think they should have said you will if you let children cache unsupervised. :roll:
Imposing rules is a funny thing, it almost never changes those who need changing the most. :wink:
Are we marking a safe and sane trail for others to follow by removing multi-tools but not removing caches that we 'know' are placed next to wasp nest or in poison ivy? :idea: Many have been harmed by wasp and poison ivy/oak but how many have been harmed by MT's found in caches?

ACK! Toy snakes are a no no? I found some at the a local dollar store that are usually 5 bucks or more at some stores. They are a wooden articulated snake and are pretty neat...I thought anyway. I do try to leave them rolled up and on the side of the cachebox and not coiled to scare when you open the lid. Any one else think they are not good? I thought kids, especially the boys would love them. I'll go an remove them if anyone else has issues with these...

I also put some plastic snakes and other reptilian/amphi fauna in several caches. I wouldnt worry about it.

I wouldn't worry either. I'm a big anti-snake person and we've been known to put rubber, clothe and wood snakes in caches, especially at halloween.

No like is not exactly the correct definition. Phoebia is closer to the truth. Which is very very difficult considering what I do and where I work for a living and then adding my hobby of caching on top of it. You should ask my husband and my co-workers, they have some very funny stories they just love to repeat about me and snakes.

I seem to remember a snake incident at the event last August involving my son (Squirrel 21309) & LE. Hmmmm
