Groundspeak has been alluding to the fact that they want to get a massive number of finds on October 10th as part of their 10th anniversary celebration. It's also National Earthcache day (I had two bumper stickers saying as much sent to me recently from GSA.)
Anyway, I'm posting this out there because I WAS going to do a mini event to try to get people into Fort Smith to do the Busy Day cache I have on 10-10-10, but I forgot to make it, and I missed the deadline, so oh well.
Anyway, On the main forums they are talking about that you might want to cache on the 10th, as they just added the 'souvenir' page, and the powers that be aren't disputing the fact that there may be one automatically handed out to people who cache on that day.
(but if anyone wants to do the busy day challenge on the 10th, go for it. I've got a couple caches I plan on posting that day as it is.)

Hadn't even thought much about it ..but now think I will make sure and try to find 10 on that day for sure. Thanks for waking my brain up this morning.

We recently read that Groundspeak is counting all the accounts that log cache finds on 10-10-10 to see how many cachers are caching. They believe that we might beat the previous record from April 18, 2010 when 56,654 accounts logged. Even one cache found counts since they are counting how many accounts log a cache rather than the number of caches logged. In some states there are 10-10-10 events planned, but attending an event is not necessary to be counted in the numbers.

Wow. This sounds interesting. I had mentioned the date 10-10-10 but had not thought about caching. I will defintely find at least 10 caches that day. Thanks for alerting us to this. Ashallond I will also be watching for your new caches to post.

I put out a cache for today, and my FTF'er already logged it and got a 10-10-10 souvenir for their profile. Key I think is that you log the cache TODAY.
Go get 'em.

Yep. 2ter and I grabbed some and logged them today. It gave us both a special souvenir icon. My understanding is that it is only available for caches logged and found today.

Is anyone else experiencing super-congestion of gc.com? My iPhone app was paralyzed, so I had to boot up my laptop, which was just shy of molasses. When I got home to log my TEN finds, including FOUR FTF's, and also to create a few cache hide descriptions, I find the website paretic.

Yep. Took me FO-EVA to log my caches and 2ter to log her few she got.

When I got home to log my TEN finds ...
According to Groundspeak, it doesn't take 10 finds. Per their blog (Latitude 47):
The geocaching community is attempting to break the record for number of accounts that logged caches in a single day. Currently that number stands at 56,654. Even one log on 10-10-10 counts since we are tallying how many accounts log a cache, rather than the number of caches logged.
However, by coincidence, I also made 10 finds. I didn't start out to do so, it just worked out that way. Of course, I had one DNF (the cache was missing, it really was, but I guess that counts as a DNF. But that is a topic for another discussion.) But yes, around 1 to 2:30 PM today, the website was painfully slow. However, it is running back at normal speed late this afternoon (around 5 PM).
By the way, does anyone know how to display the souvenir image on their profile page. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I had planned to get out and find 1 cache after dinner tonight in order to meet the requirement for the souvenir but 3 new ones were published in the area. I just had to try for the FTF and ended up finding the last 2 in the dark but it was well worth it as these were in a really great place that I never knew existed. I thought geocaching around the Russellville area had shown me just about everything there was to see these last 7 years but again I was proven wrong by a couple of new cachers (the Cacklers and McNeelys) that led me to a wonderful new area. Just goes to show you that one of the best things about this sport is the places it will take you.

I'm really glad you liked the area. You should definitely go back during the day. The views from the top of the main (Martian) rock are great, but I imagine you could get some awesome shots of the pillar rocks as well (Not sure if you saw those tonight, but they are impressive). You can also go straight up the pillar rocks and you will be very very very high up and could probably get some good pictures there too. Hopefully some more cachers will head that way and get the trail overgrowth back down to a reasonable level soon. Congrats on all those FTFs :D

You are right, IRBH. It takes dedication, enthusiasm and a lot of energy and sleep deprivation to get the FTF's here. I was east of Oppelo when these were published, so I was lucky enough to be close to the two new ones on Harris Brake lake. I figured the Griswolds might try to nab this one before dark, but no one would dare venture up the trail to the other two with less than an hour of daylight left. Surely, the two Out of the Worlds would be safe until morning. It is now 0100 as I notate this one, and save for my 1.5-hour accidental nap this evening while putting my son to bed, I've been up 31 hours, with just 6.5 hours of sleep in the last 55 hours. Thank you :D thank you :D thank you :D for logging your find tonight, so that I can forget about setting my alarm clock for 0600. Obsessive? No doubt. Physically destructive? I vote yes. Mentally ill? Perhaps. One thing's for sure...this was an awesome day with a lot of good finds and new friendships, and I'm exhausted. Tonight I will slumber, and I will catch these three later. Can't wait to discover this strange new world that I never knew existed.

I did my part today. Was only going to grab one over in Oklahoma, but ended up getting 2 there, came back home and Pizzaboy2600 hadn't gotten one yet today, so we headed out to supper and got Ashallonds 10/10/10 cache. According to Geocaching.com on Facebook, the record has been smashed, with total numbers being finalized and posted tomorrow. :D

Hope everyone went out and found at least 1 cache yesterday. I made a short run over in the edge of Ok. and picked up a few. No doubt in my mind we will break all the records for finds on this day. :D

I wanted to do 10 for the 10-10-10 count. But will have to settle for 9 and one DNF. Like ORR posted. Also wanted to hit a milestone but I am 1 cache shy of that as well. Too bad about the DNF. But that is part of it.
Had a great day caching though.

Went and snagged a clump in North Fort Smith I hadn't done, but couldn't get one because...there was a wedding going on at one of the sites.

Ash--I just now noticed your 10-10-10 cache. I'll be in your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks concentrating on puzzles and projections. This one's just a small detour away, so I've got it bookmarked. Do I get another very special souvenir? :P

Had not considered the possibility...surely, then, there are caches for 8-8-8, 7-7-7, 6-6-6 8O , 5-5-5, etc!

Looks like they are voting on doing the recount again on 11-11-11. Last tally I looked at showed over 20,000 more caches logged since the count on 4/18/10. The craze of geocaching is spreading like wild fire. Yeah..

True, that. At a recent family gathering my uncle asked me if I had done any caching recently--no huge surprise there, but when a couple of cousins started discussing a few nearby caches, I was indeed a bit surprised. The secret is out! It's a pandemic!

I wasn't caching in August of 08, so there isn't an 08 or 07..06 or any like that.
There will be an 11-11-11 cache.
