Honeymoon Trip to New Orleans

Pizzaboy2600 and myself are getting hitched up in 2 weeks and then honeymooning in New Orleans. We're going down 2 different ways, Shreveport and then south of 10 and coming up into New Orleans from the south and then coming home the river road the whole way. Does anyone have any suggestions for not to miss caches on the way down or back or while we're there. We plan on hitting all the ones in the French Quarter, but want to make sure our other stops are worth it and good ones. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks! :)

Oh and we're starting out in Van Buren, so quite a bit of Arkansas space to cover as well. :D So not to miss caches in Arkansas and Louisiana would be nice.

There are several fun caches in the French Quarter including several old virtual caches. They offer a great opportunity to walk around the area and see some of the history of this great old city.

If I could go back and only do one cache, I would not have to think about which one to do. VIEW CARRE' (GCE02C) by Bamboozle is one of my all time favorite caches. Check out the cache page and read some of the logs. You will not want to miss this one.

There are several caches in the large cemetery in Metarie--look at Necropolis, New Orleans Style--for starters in that area. The caches take you to some really cool spots. That's an awesome place to visit anyway.

Also, if you plan to go home by going back west and taking I-55 north to Jacksonville, MS, there are over 150 caches just under the I-55 between I-10 and I-12 on an old highway. We did over a hundred of them in about half a day. They are called Hang'm High on Hwy. 51.

Like Woodwalker, I highly recommend VIEW CARRE' (GCE02C) by Bamboozle. If you can do it through the week before 3:00pm you might actually get to meet him.

Thanks for the tips.yes, we plan on hitting all the ones in the Quarter, we're staying there for the week so it should be no problem to hit those while we're walking around. OMG I looked at View Carre and it looks amazing! I might have passed this one by because pizzaboy2600 is not yet a premium member, but now we're gonna have to go, might have to get that boy a membership!

I have had the good fortune to be escorted on French Quarter Caching Tours by Bamboozle and other New Orleans cachers for the last two years. Here is a list of ones that I think you should consider. Most are virtuals.

GCGFHX--Marie Laveau, Voodoo Queen (spooky above ground grave)
GCGFJ4--Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop

GCGHQC--Ignatius J. Reilly
GCA5A9--A Shining Example

One micro you need to find is GC20W31--Brangelina! (close to Brad Pitt's and Angelina Jolie's house in the Quarter)

Just a few that come to mind. Be sure to email Bamboozle ahead of time that way he may can arrange for your visit at View Carrie and take you up. That one is worth the visit to New Orleans.

We have plans to make it back down there this December to make our 3rd annual French Quarter tour.

Definitely need to hit the Marie Laveau virtual, as a kid my parents took me to a bunch of cemeteries trying to find her grave and we never found it, although they did buy me a Marie Laveau doll, so I feel I need to find her tomb. Although I have read going to the cemeteries isn't safe because people hide behind the tombs, we're doing one cemetery tour and I'm not for sure that her cemetery is on that one....Did it seem safe to go alone when you were there?

Yes it was safe. Definitely a daytime only cache. I think the cache page lists the hours. Have fun and enjoy the city. You may want to consider checking out the Louisiana Geocachers Webpage. Those are mostly New Orleans and the surrounding area members. All of them are extremely helpful and would be glad to assist you.

After ww9 and MathSeeker went to New Orleans, all he could talk about was View Carre'! It sounds awesome.

geo-j was born in New Orleans, I haven't been since 1984 - year after we were married and the thing that impressed me was the enormous pile of parts left over when they had a crawfish boil one night. OH AND CAFE DU MONDE!!!! Gotta go there!!

Pretty much got our trip caches planned out, 6 on the way down, including a quick cache in Texas in Texarkana and then about 30 in New Orleans and 6 on the way home including a quick run into Natchez to log one in Mississippi. :D Hoping to stop and get the hotel cache that's in Russelville I think as well.

I'm sure we'll have some good stories, and I messaged Bamboozle from View Carre and we should be meeting up with him next Monday afternoon. :D Wish I could make it my 200th, but I'm 43 away...we'll see. maybe some new caches will post in the river valley this week? hint hint. lol.

We had a blast on our honeymoon. Sometimes I think I'm a little more crazy for cache than Pizzaboy2600 but he withstood it gallantly! :D I think we hit a total of 22 caches in Louisiana, including most of the French Quarter, and a good portion of the ones in City Park. Only hit 2 in Arkansas on the trip...Tha' Lighthouse on the way down and one in Dumas on the way back. We did the way back in one day and pairing that with a little caching made for a long day! Too tired to stop by the time we hit Clarksville. We were able to pick up one in the Texas part of Texarkana and a pretty cool Lookout Tower one in Mississippi. Also picked up one in one of my favorite places Transylvania!

View Carre in NOLA was amazing! And definitely should be on the must do list of any cacher! The view was fabulous and the stories told by our guide were wonderful as well.

There were two other honeymooning geocaching couples there while we were but did not meet them "on the trail". We did however meet some cachers from the Buffalo, NY area while taking notes for a virtual!

I would also highly recommend the Yo Mama cache in the Quarter, not for the cache but for the burgers at the cache location. Best darn burger ever, peanut butter and bacon!

It was neat getting to another state and seeing how they hid their urban caches...the only thing about NOLA is that most of the quarter smells like pee and vomit which made getting up close and personal with some cache locations not very pleasant at all!

We would also like to highly recommend the Olivier House Hotel to anyone going. Older furnishings, not cookie cutter and right up our alley!

This trip reallly made me wish virtuals were still allowed, had so much fun doing the virtuals down there (our first ones). And if anyone would like to see us in our wedding outfits. Take a gander at the "Soup On" cache by jdmhunter at Fort Chaffee. Haven't posted pics yet but will in a few days...waiting to log finds in the correct order.

I still need to get our honeymoon pics printed up. With the trip just being the two of us, most of the pics are of one of us at a time which makes for some odd honeymoon pics or they're of the reaching out holding the camera and blindly taking pics of ourselves variety. lol. I'll see what I can do though.

Hope you can make it to the breakfast. I've always heard they have a good breakfast buffet there but have never eaten it, but I do know I can make a mean dent in some breakfast buffet bacon. :D

Guwisti I am glad you are hosting breakfast event in Van Buren. The first event I ever attended was a breakfast event there two years ago. They do serve a good breakfast buffet. Looking forward to seeing all the area cachers and some out of towners there as well.
