View Full Version : Conway Bomb Squad makes another find

The Conway Bomb Squad's robot has another find. This time they exploded an ammo can that was clearly marked as a "Geocache" The fire chief said that anyone could have labeled a bomb with a sticker.
They are now requesting that geocachers use "clear" containers for caches. Although the chief also said if they find one they will probably still "explode" it just in case. I went out last night and replaced ammo cans that are in public places with clear containers. I'd suggest that other Conway cachers do the same.
The chief of police has sent me his number and said he'd arrange a meeting with the fire/bomb squad so we could work out a "middle ground"
I don't understand the urgency? Why can't they check with the property owner? Why can't they look at the geocache website? If it is there it MIGHT not be dangerous.... but I 'spose a sneaky bomber could look there also. Phone number on the container maybe?

Wow, sounds like the Conway Bomb Squad must be a little slow. I didn't realize that Conway was such an evil, violent place that would neccesitate the need for a "bomb squad". In fact I'm not sure I have ever heard of a bomb being detonated anywhere in the Natural State. Unless it was an ammo can blown up by a "bomb squad".
I don't mean to undervalue our law enforcement people. They do an admirable and sometimes thankless job. This doesn't sound like trained law enforcement personnel. This just sounds like a bunch of wannabe's with nothing better to do than go to our website and "accidently find" something to blow up in the name of public safety. That's just my two cents worth.

I think they are being extremely cautious. Makes me feel secure that if we ever do have a bomb in Conway that these guys will know how to deal with it. The reporter at the Log Cabin was able to find it on the website, even though it was a mystery cache and the coordinates weren't listed.
When I meet with the bomb squad chief I plan to give him my phone number and encourage him to call me whenever they have any suspicious packages to see if I can be of any assistance.

I talked to a Conway PD officer about this over Christmas, and anytime they have a suspicious package they have a set protocol they have to follow and that is where the Bomb Squad comes in. They have a rash of some stupid people who like to take firecrackers wrap them with duct tape and see how big of a bang they can get. They have been leaving them in peoples yards, and in various places around town. That is the problem as I understand it.
When you have your meeting with CPD and CFD would be willing to setup a GC account and they would be notified of new caches and they could know where the current caches are. Education of the PD and FD will maybe help this situation, if I can assist you with your meeting please let me know. I have talked to The PD and Sheriffs offices when I place caches and I don't have a problem doing so.
I think that they are being unreasonable about the Clear Containers. Do Geocaches in much larger towns do not have to be clear?

...they exploded an ammo can that was clearly marked as a "Geocache".
The "solution" that was offered last time was to have each cache clearly labeled. Apparently, that is no longer sufficient. One thing is certain: the Conway authorities can't say geocachers were not compliant with their instructions.
They are now requesting that geocachers use "clear" containers for caches. Although the chief also said if they find one they will probably still "explode" it just in case.
I don't understand the point of requesting that caches be put in clear containers if the end result would be explosion anyway. If a clear container would avoid that happening, then I can see some benefit, both to the PD and to the geocacher...
The chief of police has sent me his number and said he'd arrange a meeting with the fire/bomb squad so we could work out a "middle ground"
I fully support the work that the Conway PD and bomb squad does every day in trying to keep the community safe. I can't speak for anyone else, but I enthusiastically join with the chief in looking for a compromise. I assume most cachers would be willing and anxious for this as well.

This all sounds like a bunch of Iraqi War vets that formed a Bomb Squad. They realized that they need to blow up stuff to satisfy their urges and decided to pick on cache containers. I recommend they go back to Iraq where the real danger is, cause I know it ain't in Arkansas. No terrorist would dare mess with Arkansas, where guns out number the population by 100-1.

Here's today's article (http://www.thecabin.net/stories/012109/loc_0121090005.shtml) on the incident from the Conway newspaper. From the article, the cache was not "blown up". A high-velocity water cannon, mounted on a robot, was used to open the ammo box up. The article contains a photo of the ammo box and contents, and it is pretty impressive what the water cannon did to that ammo box!
I'll be interested to see what comes out of Tim's meeting with the police chief.

This is also an uncalled for slam at our veterans. Our soldiers are all volunteers and professionals, who are underpaid for their service to their country. We owe them our respect, not our ridicule. Perhaps you've watched too many movies. Regarding the number of guns in Arkansas, Oklahoma has a lot of guns too. But that didn't stop a terrorist named Timoty McVeigh.

WOW!! I can't believe that they have blown up another one! They must have to justify the $$$$ that they spent on the robot.
Just today, I bought several clear lock & lock containers to use as caches in Maumelle. Had planned to use camo tape, but I guess that now I should just leave them clear. In addition, I will notify the Maumelle Police Dept, Maumelle Fire Dept. & the Maumelle Parks & Rec Dept and hope that will be sufficient.
I just hope that North Little Rock does not decide to start blowing them up. There would not be many caches left in Burns Park!

If NLR starts blowing up all the caches in Burns Park, there won't be much Burns Park left!
I agree that there needs to be some middle ground reached, but after one or two of these things, I don't agree that a lack of education is the problem.
I have several friends who are Arkansas State Troopers, and a nephew who is a Houston Texas police officer. I have the utmost respect for professional law enforcement officials.
I also know a guy that I fired for STEALING from the store that I managed, who is now a badge and gun totin' Garland County Sheriff's Deputy. There are bad apples in every group.
It sounds to me that someone is going overboard trying to get some headlines or make a name for himself.
This can was in place for five months before it was imploded. That doesn't make me feel any safer knowing that it took them five months to sniff out this "bomb".
One last thing. I spent the day after Christmas with flannelman and his kids running around Conway finding these cans, and we had a wonderful time. I spent about fifty dollars on food and snacks that day, and twenty five on gasoline. All of this was spent in Conway. BSA and CPdenton have done a wonderful job in getting caches out there, to go along with the others that were there. Until the Conway BS lightens up a little, and someone gets smarter than a fifth grader, I will be spending my money elswhere. Maybe BSA could start hiding these cans outside of town and I'll just fill up in Perryville.
I don't know why this riles me up so. I suppose it is just the injustice of it. I think if they really wanted to work with us, they wouldn't tell him to put it in a clear container, so they can BLOW IT UP ANYWAY! I guess that this could happen to anyone of us, so maybe that is why it peeves me so.
Tim, I hope your meeting is productive and maybe you can hammer out something that can be used as a model for future considerations. Please keep us posted.
May your cache rest in pieces.

We have a meeting planned and should have it in the next few days. We need to work with the authorities so that we can do what it takes to keep geocaching in Conway. I hope we can put something together that will work for the authorities as well as the geocaching community.
Bottom line: It doesn't need to be Us vs. Them, but we need to be willing to work together.
I'll keep everyone informed of what happens.

Thanks for the update Tim. If you would like some company at the meeting just email me the time and location and I will try to be there to help in any way I can. Thanks for your efforts on this issue. I would really hate to see geocaching stopped in Conway just as it is starting to grow again.

Wow....I just don't know what to say. I would think they still could have had one of the people looking it up in google earth KML, pulling the cache page up and seeing when it was last found, what it looks like, and the owner. I'm unsure why the robot just didn't open it? Would it have made a difference of weather it was opened with high pressure water or a robotic hand? I also wonder if they have a k9 dog trained to sniff explosives?
I went ahead and e-mailed the fire and police chief, mayor and parks department my above idea on using google earth to see what is in the suspicious area while the crew is en route. I also told them that if they were following protocol, they are unfairly targeting geocaching. That this same thing could have happened to a suspicious piece of trash on the side of the road (like a ice chest or tote that blew out of a truck), a suspicious car, or even a suspicious parcel left on the steps of a house. Heck, I've seen suspicious containers in peoples trash on trash pickup day!
I mentioned that they should tell the press that this was a very useful and great exercise for their crew and that geocaching is not to blame. If someone called in something else, the exact same protocol would have been followed and someones car, mail, or trash could have been "tested". This will prevent them telling the world that "geocaches are ok to put bombs in b/c we won't look" and it will make sure those people will put it in something else.
This happening a third time.....I just thought that some common sense would have kicked in or that they should not have made such a big deal about it and viewed it as a training exercise. I also don't think clear containers is the BEST approach. If they see a suspicious trinket or if it has camo tape, they'll still blow it up. Education and a modification to protocol is the best tool. It was mentioned to put a phone number on the outside, that could be a great compromise so the ammo cans can continue to be used. Half the fun of geocaching is getting to see the unique containers and camo.
I'll be paying attention to this thread and the news and see what comes of it. BSA keep us posted as to what happens.

My first thought was "well Goober and Gomer blew up an ammo can." After giving it some more thought, I realize that those guys have a tough and sometimes no win job. Compromise and discussion are certainly more in line with the philosophy of geocaching. As an educator, I hope this turns out as an example of a situation worked out by calm discussion and agreeable to all sides.

Hello to everyone. First let me clear up a misconception, the bomb squad is an arm of the fire department. The police are there to help us with traffic and bystanders so they do not deserve any fall out. I nor anyone else involved have any intention of stopping geocaching in Conway. As a matter of fact I would like to give it a try myself it sounds like a great way to get out and be active. The members of the squad are trained to the federal level, they are experienced and very serious about their job.Their job is about safety for everyone and there are federal guidelines they must follow. Geocachers are not the problem, the problem is due to people out there who really do make bombs and have cost citizens, police and firefighters their lives, thus the guidelines and protocols. We have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning and with everyones input we will come up with a plan that will work so geocaching can continue. Like I said, if someone is willing to take me along I would like to give it a try. Thanks for your time.

YOUSE guys (as they say in Jersey, no, I am not from there, know better than I do, as I am new at this, how many ammo cans are out there. Of my dozen finds, at least two were of that type. Even though I took training to look for suspicious objects, it never crossed my mind that it might be considered a bomb threat. If they found it near a bridge, that would raise questions. Were I an anarchist, and was smart enough to come up with the idea, it would be the perfect cover.

I am looking forward to the meeting tomorrow and I want to help the police and fire department in any way I can. I have several friends on the CFD and I know some of the police officers as well. I feel confident that we can work out some guidelines that will allow cachers to continue to hide and seek caches and stay out of the their way.
We also are planning to meet with as many local cachers as possible on Tuesday evening, Jan. 27, at 7 at the Pizza Inn on Hogan to go over the guidelines for placing caches in Conway.

Hey I gotta say that till I saw CFDChief's post I thought Conway was just getting hostile toward geocaching like Sherwood did a few years ago. I'm glad to see that I was wrong. If you go on a day that I can fit into my schedule I'll tag along with you and Bruce to show you what we do. As Bruce said, we had a great time in Conway from daylight to dark finding caches with my kids. I went to places in Conway I have never seen before and probably never would have gone to otherwise. I hate to see this happen to the larger caches because those are the ones the kids love so much. It is almost like Christmas to my kids when they get to dig through an ammo can full of toys. I'm sure you will be able to work something out that will be accetable to everyone involved.
Thanks,

Our meeting was very productive. We learned a lot about how the PD and FD/Bomb Squad do their job. We talked about ways we can help each other out.
Our biggest responsibility as cachers is to try and make and place our caches in a way so that they never even have to be called out in the first place. Then on an occasion when they are called out they have a way to check and verify that what is being reported is a geocache.
I urge Conway-area cachers to come to the meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 at Pizza Inn on Hogan so that we can discuss what was talked about today. The FD hopes to have a representative from the Bomb Squad there to help answer questions.
I was glad that I was able to attend the meeting today between members of AGA and the Conway officials. I feel very encouraged about the way things went. It seemed as though they were genuinely interested in keeping the caching here in town.
They didn't come in with an attitude of our way or no way. They came in trying to come up with a viable solution for both parties. That had me feeling good and I think that everyone else should feel good about it too.
These guys were just trying to do the job set before them and we should all be thankful to them for it. They do a job I am glad I don't have. In that line of work, there is very little room for error. So let's remember that and try to see things from their side of the fence too.
The geocaching is still fun here. It will be fun here in the future as long as we remember to work with them and not against them.
QC, If you need a local Conway guide to get you and the chief around town, I would LOVE to help. We have a big car too, seating for 8. Let me know because I would LOVE to tag along and break in a new cacher with you.
I will end my rambling now.

Yesterday (Friday 1-23) Sioux-ZQ and I made a trip to Conway to do some caching. It was a great evening. I went to college in Conway and it still seems somewhat like my hometown. We found about 20 caches, had a great meal at Old Chicago and revisited some familar spots. In short we enjoyed a great hobby and a evening in a great town. I am very encouraged that the crisis is over for Geocaching in Conway and good times are ahead.
Congratulations and thanks to those who took the lead to start the dialogue that is so promising.

I have been reading about the problems in Conway but just haven’t had time to post my thoughts on the situation. I have worried for awhile about potential conflicts between geo caching and police and fire officials. Let’s face it. When we are out looking for geo caches especially in an urban setting we just look suspicious. The police are trained to look for suspicious people. The same thing goes for bomb squads. They are trained to look for suspicious packages and we’re out there putting them out. After General Lee and the Sherwood fiasco a couple of years back I really became paranoid every time I saw a policeman while I was out geo caching. Summer before last my wife kids and I were on our way back from Colorado and we stopped for the night in Annie Oakley Kansas. The next morning while the kids were still asleep my wife and I got up early to do a little geo caching before we headed out for the day. There was a cache located by an old filling station that had been turned into a community center. As I pulled around the building I noticed a police car about a block down the street and since I knew he would be able to see me as I looked for the cache I decided to skip it and come back later. After picking up a cache at the local high school we came back and there were no police cars in sight so I got out and started hunting for the cache container. After a couple of minutes here comes the police car. I walked over to the officer and said “I hope you know what geo caching is”. He smiled at me and said, “Well I didn’t until about a year ago when I drove by this place about 3 in the morning and found somebody snooping around the building”. “I had him spread eagle up against the police car with his hands on top of his head as he tried to tell me all about geo caching.” Now that I know about it when I see someone walking around this building I know exactly why they are there. I am glad to see the Conway officials willing to work to keep geo caching alive and going in Conway. I think that each of us need to make a visit to the local fire house and police station to make sure they are aware of geo caching also. The nature of the game has you sneaking around trying to look inconspicuous for fear of muggles. When it comes to our local authorities I think education is the key and they need to know all they can about how we play the game so what we do doesn’t interfere with their duties and responsibilities.

I wonder if any of the people in charge of the bomb squad are using iPhones and if they are if we could donate the Geocaching App to them. I would be willing to donate a few to the local Supervisors so when they get to a location the can pull the app up and see if it really is a cache. The Geocaching app is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

Did the meeting of the Conway cachers take place last night? Or was it cancelled due to weather? I had hoped to attend, but I decided against it because of the poor weather. It would be helpful if a summary of the information presented at the meeting could be posted here.
The meeting did take place, but much more informal than we had hoped. Due to the weather, we told the Fire chief and bomb squad guys that we would schedule another meeting soon and not to worry about coming last night. We did have 6 cachers turn out to attend, and some had their families with them.
BSA534 had a good presentation about what we have talked about with the agencies involved. There was also some very good discussions about Conway area geocachers watching the area for caches we feel are questionable or might cause a problem.
I think that we plan on another event/meeting to talk about it more in depth and have the various agencies involved with that meeting. We will keep it posted and let everyone know.
This is a very short listing about what happened, so if anyone else was there and wants to add to this or correct me on something please do so.

After the Board meeting Friday night, I had the opportunity to do a little caching in Conway with topkitty98. She had not found the caches at Walmart and wanted to get those off her list. We found the first one quickly and headed to the second. As she was signing the log, one of Conway's finest pulled in beside of us. He asked if everything was okay and we told him that we were geocaching. He acknowledged that he was familiar with it, but had not tried it himself. He showed us the computer in his unit and the GPS software he had loaded. He was very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in geocaching. He finally wished us well and left us to our task.
This encounter speaks volumes for the great job that the local cachers have done in taking a bad situation and turning it around for a positive outcome. It is great to see that caching is still alive and well in Conway and my hat is off to all the local cachers for a job well done.

Astrodav.....I hope you read all of this forum thread. It seems that you are new to this sport or at least this website. If you knew the trouble that some of the cachers were going through on placement of caches, included in this thread, you would understand why some of us would say such things. I happen to have a friend (former, no longer) who is an Iraqi Vet. He told some of us back here at home that we all owe him more than a handshake, a hug and a pat on the back for what he has done in the war. He signed up for the Army even though we had a war 8 years in the making and not leaving anytime soon. I told him with that attitude I don't owe him jack chit and that he volunteered for it. That conversation took place the same time this thread was going on and many of us cachers were hot under the collar about what was going on in Conway. I guess the timing of the "vet" coming home and saying what he did and the timing of this thread was not good timing thus what I said was a bit of venting. I suppose I should have not have pinpointed any group of individuals and just said "a bunch of guys needing work."
On a bit of a side note/suggestion......you might want to consider meeting some of us and find out who we really are and see how we love to cache and have fun and that we are a big ole family before you bust somebodies chops like you just did. Perhaps a private message would have been sufficient.

what freedoms? liberty has been eroded to such a point that i can only buy half a box of sudafed at a time, or let my son lay his head in my wifes lap while driving down the road, or smoke a cigarette. ill give you defending our freedoms in ww1 and 2, but iraq and afghanistan? even if whats going on over there is making us safer, life is not the same as freedom. many people live while enslaved, and most men who fight for freedom die. google freedom and death and youll see what i mean. try not to confuse liberty and life. i have to agree with dentful1, theres people in the service who are worthy of appreciation, theres also people who expect it. dont assume by what i just said that i feel one way or another about gun control, obama, bush, the war, the troops or government, its me putting things into perspective.
ive known no one to ever die from terrorism, i dont even know anyone who knows anyone. yet, everyone is afraid they will die from it. how many times have you heard of razor blades in apples on halloween? every year? check snopes, its never happened.
i dont mean to offend anyone, but people always get offended. maybe what dentful said wasnt entirely right, but it wasnt all wrong either. i got pulled over the other night at 3am, driving to the store to conquer a sunkist craving. the cop clearly told me he was looking for bad guys and i wasnt one, yet, he insisted on searching my vehicle.
blowing up an ammo can with water or with a robot isnt keeping anyone safe. its time to start telling people worrying about bombs and terrorists and al qaeda that they are going to die, but not from terrorism. more than likely from heart disease because the outdoor activity they wanted to do was prevented by people not having at least a resonable doubt. dont assume by what i just said i feel any way about conway, its citizens, law enforcement or kris allen, its just me making a statement.
another thing, about following protocol. i hear this alot lately. i heard it when the cop wouldnt transport the woman in memphis to the hospital so she died on the side of the road. i can name several instances when following protocol has caused more harm than good. i thought the whole point of us being human was that we could use better judgement. following protocol is a better way for an employer to say they didnt have faith the person could make a reasonably good choice.
again, im not trying to upset anyone. every muggle i tell about geocaching responds with, "how do you know theres not a bomb in it". to the point i have a canned response for it. i learned in school that my civil rights extended pretty far as long as they didnt infringe anyone elses civil rights. i dont think someone else having an unreasonable fear is included in that. before someone else brings up timothy mcveigh, less than 200 people were killed because of that terrible atrocity, almost 15 years ago and an estimated 15k a year die from homicide. 225,000 to 168 odds that will be shot by a murderer on the way to the ammo can bomb we are about to open that was rigged by a domestic terrorist. dont assume i support or condone any actions such as these, that i watch whale wars, that i buy sea sheperd geocoins or that i intended to start a flame war.
im a paid actor and all of this was said while in character, but hopefully its something to think about.

Freedom: Being able to offend and upset people with a statement by justifying the inflammatory remarks that people always get offended and upset while offering a disclaimer that one is a paid actor only offering a thought to ponder.
just because someone does something doesnt mean its something they are free to do. recently, a guy was able to stroll into a gym and shoot people. thanks for proving the my point about getting offended. btw, i was joking about the paid actor part, however, i am in town working for arkansas shakespeare theatre and grabbing as many caches as i can while im here.

what freedoms? liberty has been eroded to such a point that i can only buy half a box of sudafed at a time, or let my son lay his head in my wifes lap while driving down the road, or smoke a cigarette. ill give you defending our freedoms in ww1 and 2, but iraq and afghanistan? even if whats going on over there is making us safer, life is not the same as freedom. many people live while enslaved, and most men who fight for freedom die. google freedom and death and youll see what i mean. try not to confuse liberty and life. i have to agree with dentful1, theres people in the service who are worthy of appreciation, theres also people who expect it. dont assume by what i just said that i feel one way or another about gun control, obama, bush, the war, the troops or government, its me putting things into perspective.
ive known no one to ever die from terrorism, i dont even know anyone who knows anyone. yet, everyone is afraid they will die from it. how many times have you heard of razor blades in apples on halloween? every year? check snopes, its never happened.
i dont mean to offend anyone, but people always get offended. maybe what dentful said wasnt entirely right, but it wasnt all wrong either. i got pulled over the other night at 3am, driving to the store to conquer a sunkist craving. the cop clearly told me he was looking for bad guys and i wasnt one, yet, he insisted on searching my vehicle.
blowing up an ammo can with water or with a robot isnt keeping anyone safe. its time to start telling people worrying about bombs and terrorists and al qaeda that they are going to die, but not from terrorism. more than likely from heart disease because the outdoor activity they wanted to do was prevented by people not having at least a resonable doubt. dont assume by what i just said i feel any way about conway, its citizens, law enforcement or kris allen, its just me making a statement.
another thing, about following protocol. i hear this alot lately. i heard it when the cop wouldnt transport the woman in memphis to the hospital so she died on the side of the road. i can name several instances when following protocol has caused more harm than good. i thought the whole point of us being human was that we could use better judgement. following protocol is a better way for an employer to say they didnt have faith the person could make a reasonably good choice.
again, im not trying to upset anyone. every muggle i tell about geocaching responds with, "how do you know theres not a bomb in it". to the point i have a canned response for it. i learned in school that my civil rights extended pretty far as long as they didnt infringe anyone elses civil rights. i dont think someone else having an unreasonable fear is included in that. before someone else brings up timothy mcveigh, less than 200 people were killed because of that terrible atrocity, almost 15 years ago and an estimated 15k a year die from homicide.

I have read your posting several times. Personally it worried me.
I awoke at about 3:30 am to read it again. I see by your new posts that you are not really an actor afterall. I thought to myself "well that's good news" the Arts aren't in jepardy after all.
BTW chadbishop, how did you serve? I looked at your avatar and did not
recognize the uniform. Then Bam! It hit me on this sleepless night, my younger sister wore a uniform just like that while serving in the Brownies.
glad to know that my opinion on the fearmongering of terrorism posted on a local geocaching forum is causing you night terrors. you should lay awake trying to distinguish military and girl scouts, girl scout uniforms and pirate costumes rather than me. my life and time are not one of the things i need to "render unto caesar", i render that where im supposed to.

Ok, I hate tirades like this, but I'm jumping in there because I am confused. I saw a log by a Chad Bishop not too long ago and checked out his profile. It said that he had become a member in 2003 and the photo looked exactly like the one owned by cbsr who claims that he is a new cacher. I understand new cachers sometimes getting in over their heads. I was rescued many, many times and will probably be again. However, I don't understand the need to play games with good people heads and to start up a bunch of bunk on a really nice forum for no good reason....Also if I am totally way out of line, please feel free to blast me.

im cbsr joined in may, when my username was chadbishop it also said i joined in may. someone wakes up in the middle of the night to call me a brownie after i share an honest and insightful opinion and im starting a bunch of bunk with "nice people?". ive got thick skin but at no point have i attacked someones appearance or posted "inflammatory remarks". i guess ive noticed that "nice people" rather than debate a particular opinion or describe how they feel just decide to call folks names or pretend to be "offended".
