It has been in the news recently that you can get a virus just by viewing an image file (jpeg, I guess). Does anyone know if there is a risk viewing a video file?

Yes, the newest critical updates from Microsoft cover this vulnerability.

By the way, the most effective thing an end user can do to prevent viruses, worms, and trojans is to keep your computer updated with the latest patches. If you are using XP, turn on automatic updates (found in Start - Settings - Control Panel - Automatic Updates) to let your computer install these patches automatically.
