    August 2012 Geocacher Profile

The Membership Relations Committee is happy to showcase some ArkGeo Geocachers through the "Geocacher Profile". The committee thought Ron and Maribeth Laster aka rklmbl should be the next cacher to be in the spotlight.

What is your geocaching name? rklmbl

How did you choose your handle?
Used the first initials of our names and it was something we could remember.

How long have you been geocaching? Nearly 8 years

How did you find your first Geocache, and which one was it?
GC91E4 - Botanical Gardens in Grapevine, Texas

Who usually goes with you when you go caching? Usually just us

How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?
mbl used to do every puzzle cache as it was published in hopes we could get to it some day to find it....too many to keep up with now.

What town/areas have you most enjoyed caching in? Dallas/Fort Worth area, New Orleans, Columbia Tennessee, Cave City Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, and anywhere in the great state of Arkansas

Do you do paperless caching? Yes, except we may sometimes make maps when we are heading to a new area and/or a power trail.

What kind of geocaching rig do you use?
Garmin 62s is our latest purchase and mbl has her sights set on a Garmin Montana

Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?
We would use our example of meeting some of the greatest people on earth through geocaching. We have made many friends in many states through this sport. Geocaching has also taken us to so many amazing interesting places.

Where are you originally from? rkl - Harmony, Arkansas; mbl - Fort Worth, Texas

In what states have you geocached? Everywhere but the far western states, Hawaii, and Florida. Hope to remedy some of that in September and Florida of course at GW XI next May.

What was your first event ever attended?
1/21/2005 - Are We Doing It Again? Clarksville, Arkansas

How many caches have you found? over 16,000

Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?
    Anything unique and creative

What was the most famous cache that you have found? View Carre in New Orleans, Louisiana and Mingo, Kansas (oldest cache in existence)

Do you use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries? disposable but we keep the GPSs plugged in to the car as we travel

Do you enjoy hiding or finding more as your part of the hobby? Obviously we enjoy find them more than hiding them. Cut and paste logs and TFTC logs have dimmed our enthusiasm for placing caches.

Do you have a personal goal in mind when you make a hide? It is our way of giving back to other cachers. If no one hides them, there won't be anything to find.

What is you favorite type of cache hide? Virtual

Out of all your hides, what are your personal favorites that you take pride in? The famous persons series which we copied from drives, which included some of our caching heroes and pioneers in Arkansas caching but not all of them. mbl loves Iron Springs which was created by CacheMates.

What do you think the proper hide to find ratio should be to keep the sport fresh? After a cacher finds 100+ caches of different types and from different hiders, we think they should start giving back to the sport by placing caches. But its hard to come up with a ratio.

How did you end up getting into this wacky hobby? We had been on a Canadian trip where we met nonnipoppy in September 2004 and he was kind enough to take us to a couple of geocaching finds in Canada which got us hooked.

    What's your favorite geocache?
Since the favorites system was started, we have awarded favorites points to over 163 caches but we know we have missed some prior to the inception of that system. Every creative cache is our favorite.

If money was no object, where would you like to go geocaching? Above the 95th parallel in summer and Florida in winter

Do you like geocaching by yourself or in a group? We have had the most fun caching when we took other cachers with us.

How many First to Finds do you have? Several

Are you a First to Find person who is always set on go and if so, how many miles out do you have your settings on to get notifications? We have notifications set for 50 miles because that's as far out as gc.com will let us. We don't rush for FTFs any more unless its in a place where we happen to be caching or where we are planning to go.

Do you have any other hobbies besides geocaching?

    rkl - elephant training
